According to The Annie E. Casey Foundation's 2024 KIDS COUNT Data Book, Mississippi ranks #30 and reports the following:
Young children (ages 3 & 4) not in school- 50%
Fourth graders not proficient in reading- 69%
Eight graders not proficient in math- 82%
High school students not graduating on time- 12%

The National Center for Education Statistics surveyed 12,330 U.S. adults ages 16 to 74 for the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). The international study involving more than 35 countries showed that Mississippi’s literacy and numeracy rates are among the worst nationally.
